A video of Kamala Harris waving has been heavily memed since it caught the internet's attention in late July. On Monday, Harris told BuzzFeed News that it's been "strange" to see people riff on a moment she called "heartbreaking."
In an interview over text message, Harris explained that the video was captured as she stood outside a detention center for migrant children in Homestead, Florida. (Technically, the video's context was already public, but that was not central to the meme discussion.)
"I saw children lined up like prisoners," Harris said. "They had been separated from their families and put in this private detention facility. It was horrible."
Harris also reiterated that she and other members of Congress were denied entry to the facility.

Like all the other Democratic presidential candidates, Harris has spent the last few days eating pork chops and fried Oreos at the Iowa State Fair.
At the time of the interview with BuzzFeed News, Harris was headed to a healthcare roundtable near Burlington, Iowa.
